How many tiles are in a Mahjong Island set? In Mahjong Island, the answer is 152 tiles. There are three suits, four Winds, and three Dragons, with 4 copies of each. Then 8 Flowers and 8 Jokers join them.

What are the 152 tiles?

The 152 tiles fall into five kinds. Here they are, one line each.

Most of the set comes in groups of 4 identical tiles. So you will see the same tile more than once in a game. For a closer look, read Mahjong Island tiles explained: suits, Winds, and Dragons.

Three 7 Dot tiles make a Set. One more 7 Dot is still somewhere in the set.

Is that the same as other mahjong sets?

Most Mahjong Island sets share the same core: three numbered suits, plus Winds and Dragons. Traditionally the suits are called bamboo, characters, and dots. Many sets also include flower and season tiles. Some styles use them, and others leave them out.

A beginner tip: count the copies

Each suit, Wind, and Dragon tile has 4 copies, so you can count what is left. Watch each Discard, a tile a player puts down for the table. Every Discard you see is one fewer copy you can still get.

Jokers can help too. A Joker can fill a Set, three matching tiles, but never a Pair, two matching tiles.

Two 5 Crak tiles and a Joker make a Set. The Joker stands in for the third 5 Crak.

What do you build with the tiles?

You win by completing one hand on the Island Card, Mahjong Island's own card of hands. A winning hand is 14 tiles that match one line on the card. The Island Card 2027 has 45 hands in 9 sections.
