A Joker is a wild tile that stands in for any tile in a Set, a Run, or a Pair.

  • A Group is three tiles: a Run or a Set.
  • A Pair is two matching tiles.

Takeaway: A Joker is wild: it stands in for any tile.

Transcript

Mahjong Island has Jokers. A Joker is wild: it can stand in for any tile you need.

Here a Joker stands in for 5 Dots, so 4, Joker, 6 makes a Run.

With two West Winds, a Joker makes a Set.

And with a 9 Characters, it makes a Pair.

But every Group needs at least one real tile. Three Jokers alone don't count.

And a Joker can't be discarded, so one is never taken from someone else.

Each game deals four Jokers, and each kind has its own bonus, so check which ones you've got.

Use them freely: a Joker can finish any Group, as long as one real tile is in it.

Next lesson: One tile from Mahjong
