You need no sign-up and no download to practice Mahjong Island. Open mahjongisland.com in your browser and play one hand. Then try the day's 3 puzzle boards.

## What should a beginner practice first?

Practice reading the Island Card, Mahjong Island's own card of hands. You win by completing one hand on the card: 14 tiles that match one line.

Each hand on the card is written as groups of identical tiles. Two groups to learn first are the Set and the Pair.

A Set is three matching tiles (called a pung in traditional mahjong).

Tiles: 7 Dot, 7 Dot, 7 Dot. A Set: three 7 Dot tiles.

A Pair is two identical tiles. A Joker can fill a Set, but never a Pair.

Tiles: Red Dragon, Red Dragon. A Pair: two Red Dragons.

For more on these shapes, see the lesson on [Groups and Pairs](/learn/what-you-build). To see full lines from the card, read [Mahjong Island winning hands with examples](/guides/mahjong-winning-hands).

## How does the Daily Puzzle help you practice?

The Daily Puzzle gives you 3 boards to solve in order each day. Each board is dealt from an Island Card game.

Every offered choice is graded best, good, or miss, so more than one answer can be right. Solving the day's puzzle earns that day's collectible tile. Try today's at [the Daily Puzzle](/puzzle).

## One tip: count the tiles that finish your hand

When you are one tile from winning, more than one tile may finish your hand. Count the tiles that finish your hand.
